Amputation and fibular hemimelia

For many years amputation has been considered the standard of care in the treatment of fibular hemimelia (FH). Due to the lack of ankle stabilization and the significant limb length discrepancy amputation is the recommended form of treatment in many cases. Advances in ankle reconstruction and limb lengthening have given some patients another option in treatment but amputation is still widely used and recommended in many individuals. There are two types of amputation methods used - the Boyd procedure and the Symes procedure.
