Information about fibular hemimelia
Fibular Hemimelia is described as a congenital partial or complete absence of the fibula. Most of the time it is associated with other lower limb anomalies which could include the femur, knee, tibia, ankle and/or foot. The most pronounced problem is that of a shortened tibia and poor ankle structure. Currently there is no known cause of FH although some theories have been proposed. It is not considered to be genetic.
Treatment options
Currently fibular hemimelia is treated either with a below the knee amputation or in certain cases limb lengthening with ankle reconstruction. There are many factors that ultimately result in which treatment option is the best choice for each individual. Follow the links below to learn more about each treatment option.
